Your first visit

What happens at a first dental visit?

A first visit with a new dentist usually takes about an hour. Expect a short health history, X-rays, an exam of your teeth and gums, and often a cleaning. The dentist then explains what they found and the options, and the office gives you its own prices before any treatment starts.

Bring: your insurance card if you have one, a photo ID, a list of the medicines you take, and any recent dental X-rays.

Been a while? That's common. Say so when you book, so the office can plan enough time. Nervous patients can ask about breaks, numbing and sedation options.

How it works

How does the call work?

FindDentist365 is a free referral line. We don't treat patients; we help you reach a dental office.

  1. Call and tell us what you need

A checkup, a toothache, braces, dentures: say it in your own words, plus your ZIP code. It takes about a minute.

  2. We connect you

Your call goes to a participating dental office or scheduling line that serves your area, when one is available.

  3. You book with the office

The office tells you its openings, which insurance it takes and its own prices. You decide whether to book.

Insurance and paying

Will a dentist take my insurance?

Dental offices set their own prices and choose which insurance plans they accept, so the fastest way to know is to ask the office before you book. When you're connected, ask three things: do you take my plan, what will the first visit include, and do you offer payment plans.

Your situationWhat to ask the office
Private dental insuranceAre you in network for my plan? Will you check my benefits before treatment?
Medicaid or CHIPDo you accept my state's Medicaid or CHIP dental plan? Children's dental care is covered in every state.
No insuranceDo you have a payment plan or an in-office membership plan? Can I get a written treatment plan first?
MedicareOriginal Medicare doesn't cover routine dental care; some Medicare Advantage plans do. Bring your plan card.

More options, including dental schools and community health centers, are on our paying for dental care page.

Questions

Questions people ask before they call

Is the call free?

Yes. Calling FindDentist365 is free, and you don't have to book anything. If you book with a dental office, you pay that office directly for your care.

Who answers when I call?

We connect your call to a participating dental office or a dental scheduling line that serves your area, when one is available. FindDentist365 is a referral service. We are not a dental office and we don't provide dental care.

Will the dentist take my insurance?

Plans differ from office to office, including Medicaid and CHIP dental plans. Have your insurance card ready and ask the office before you book. If you don't have insurance, ask whether they offer payment plans or a membership plan.

It's been years since I saw a dentist. Is that OK?

Yes. Dental offices see people every day who haven't been in a long time. Say so when you book; most offices plan a longer first visit with an exam and X-rays, then talk you through what they find before any treatment.

Can I get a same-day appointment?

Often, yes, especially for pain or a broken tooth. Many offices keep a few same-day slots for emergencies. Openings depend on the office and the time you call, so call early in the day if you can.

How can I check a dentist's license?

Every state has a dental board with a free online license lookup. Search your state's name plus "dental board license lookup". You can also ask the office for the dentist's full name and license number.

Is my call recorded?

Calls may be recorded for quality and connected to a participating dental office or referral network. You'll hear a notice at the start of the call. See our privacy policy.

Can you give me dental advice on the phone?

No. We help you reach a dental office; we don't diagnose or treat. Nothing on this site is dental or medical advice. If you think you have an emergency, see the warning signs on our emergency dentist page.
